Sunday 10th May 2026 sees the Kelly Read Cup Final taking place at the LNER Stadium, Sincil Bank, Lincoln between 2 Clubs both of whom have a fine pedigree in this Competition.
This Competition is for village-based Clubs who play their League games from a village location. Whilst not officially recognised as being, many of our Clubs refer to this Competition as “the Village Trophy”.
Metheringham FC entertain Nettleham FC Sunday with both Clubs having won this Competition numerous times over the years. The Competition is named after the late Mr Kelly Read, who was an excellent and long-standing Club Secretary over many years of Branston based Clubs, notably Branston Homeguard.
Metheringham FC have experienced something of a transitional Season this time out with a change of management and restructuring of players combining their Reserve and B team from last Season. They finished the current campaign in mid-table having accrued 17 points from their League games, but it would be fair to say that they performed better in our domestic Cup Competitions, highlighted by their success in reaching the final of this Competition.
Nettleham FC Sunday has also had a mixed Season with the Club performing strongly in the Premier Division of the League for the first two-thirds of the Season rising to a position where many thought that they may challenge for top spot once all of the League matches had been completed. Unfortunately for them the final third of the Season saw them return an inconsistent set of results and their title aspirations and chances fell away sharply during April in particular. The Club also found the challenges of playing 2 games a week in the catching up of postponed matches throughout April to be a bridge too far on occasions and they struggled occasionally to fulfil all of their scheduled League fixtures. They finished the Season with 28 points from their 20 League games.
As with Metheringham FC, Nettleham FC Sunday enjoyed good Cup runs in our domestic Competitions, as well as in the Lincolnshire County Football Association County Sunday Cup where they reached the Semi-Final before losing out to Scunthorpe based Ashby FC and in so doing lost out on making the final an all Lincoln based affair.
Ahead of the game I will take a look at how the 2 teams got to the final.
